While there are many different games of poker, the basic rules of the game remain the same. Most games involve the player placing a blind bet and an ante before the players receive their cards. In other variants, players may add jokers to the deck. The number of cards in a standard pack is 52, although different casinos have different values for the cards. All hands consist of five cards, and the highest five-card poker hand is considered the winner.

A straight is five cards in order, and may not include an ace. A straight may be high or low, but it does not wrap around. A straight tie is broken when two straights have the same value. AKQJT beats KQJT9 and 5432A. When two straights are of the same rank, they are paired and the highest of them wins the pot. When both players have three of a kind, the highest of those two is a pair.
