What is a Slot?

A slot is a narrow opening, typically a door or a drawer, in a machine. The machine uses a computer program to randomly generate hundreds of thousands of numbers and then stop and display the symbols on the screen. The player can win a large sum of money by matching three or more identical symbols. A slot has different odds for different outcomes, so winning a lot of money doesn’t always mean that you’ll win.

The word slot is also used to refer to a square or rectangular space in a sport or in an organization. A slot is an interior opening on a copy desk, which is usually occupied by the chief copy editor. In ice hockey, the slot is the unmarked area between face-off circles. When a pilot is making a move, he will fly his airplane into the slot. The plane will land in the designated area, so that other aircraft can’t land on it.

A slot has a specific grammatical function and fits any morpheme sequence. In computer usage, a slot may refer to a job opening or assignment. A job position in a newspaper is occupied by the chief copy editor. A plane may have a designated slot at an airport. A computer must be equipped with the correct software in order to land safely. Changing a processor’s location in a computer is called “slotting”.
